Star Wars #1 - acrylic on canvas

The charm of this cover comes from the way the iconic Star Wars characters are portrayed differently than they appear in the movies. I love seeing a green Darth Vader and Princess Leia with red hair. Despite the cover date of July, the comic hit the newsstands in April of 1977, one month before the release of the first movie. Considering how long it takes to produce a comic, this cover was likely completed while the movie was still in production. The artist, Howard Chaykin, based the cover off of a convention poster that he illustrated to promote the film at the San Diego Comic Con in 1976.
